Notes & Reviews:
Opera d'Oro presents a new entry in the Grand Tier series, presenting deluxe editions of the most beloved complete Opera d'Oro recordings, with original artwork by Rafal Olbinski and Opera d'Oro's best remastered sound! Features a large booklet with historic photos, an essay on the opera by Robert Levine, and complete Italian-English libretto newly translated by Bill Parker. Live performance, Rome, 1968.
Joan Sutherland recorded this role commercially for Decca two years before this 1968 Roman RAI broadcast; nonetheless, she is more convincing and in slightly spryer voice here. Mario Petri also is a bit better as Assur than Joseph Rouleau on Decca, and with one exception, the rest of the cast is about equally good ... Richard Bonynge leads a convincing reading.
