Notes & Reviews:
Althought La muette de Portici celebrated is 500th performance in 1880, today it is almost entirely forgotten and infrequently presented. The work premiered in the original French at the Anhalt Theater in Dessau under the general music director Anthony Hermus in April 2010 and is now available on cpo.

We've forgotten how important La Muette de Portici was in operatic history. First performed in Paris in 1828, it was the first French grand opera. The story tells of the 1647 Neapolitan uprising against the Spaniards, and it was said to have inspired the Belgian revolt against Dutch rule in 1830. The chorus has lots to do and is up to the job. Conductor Hermus really keeps things moving. In many ways this is a more stirring performance.
