Notes & Reviews:

In September 2009 Sofya Gulyak was awarded the first prize and the Princess Mary Gold Medal at the 16th Leeds International Piano Competition - the first and only woman to achieve this distinction. Since then she has appeared all over the world to great acclaim. Rachmaninov's last original work for solo piano is the Variations on a theme of Corelli Op.42, dedicated to violinist Fritz Kreisler, the theme is in fact not by Corelli, but an anonymous tune known as 'La Folla'.

American Record Guide, March/April 2014
Readers particularly interested in this repertoire will want to know if the performance on this record is worthwhile. The answer to that question is an emphatic yes. Gulyak's playing is consistently strong. Her approach is solid, which is good for these composers. Gulyak is also at her best in fast tempos, navigating thick textures, and in slower, softer, more lyrical passages. Readers less acquainted with these pieces will want to know if they are worth getting to know. The answer to that question is also yes. These are highly expressive. The communication of clear structures and recognizable musical gestures remains central to the works presented here. Informative and well-written notes by Malcolm MacDonald complete this attractive package.
