Notes & Reviews:

Christopher Rouse is truly a special composer of today. His music has a very distinct flavor that is unique and always interesting. The gem of this CD is definately the Flute Concerto. It is a beautifully written work that utilizes the expressive qualities of the flute. The Flute Concerto is steeped in nostalgia and manages to probe the heart. The Symphony No. 2 on the other hand is an agitated, bombastic storm of ideas that will test any audiophile's system.

Gramophone Magazine
Newcomers should perhaps begin with Phaethon, a brilliantly successful orchestral showpiece from Rouse's ceaselessly energetic, rock-influenced period.

Penguin Guide
The kernel of the work is the gripping central Elegia, written in response to the terrible murder of the two-year-old James Bulger by two ten-year-old schoolboys. Rouse introduces a rich, Bach-like chorale which moves with a wake-like solemnity towards a central explosion of passionate despair...Performances here are excellent, very well played and recorded, and the Flute Concerto is unforgettable.
