Notes & Reviews:
Road Movies was nearly entitled "The Four Johns" due to the amusing coincidence that it features music by John Corigliano, John Adams, John Novacek, and John Newton. Apart from being the wonderful title of Adams' sonata for violin and piano, Road Movies is a fitting description of the journey these artists take the listener through, from the fiendishly mercurial Corigliano sonata to Adams' cooler-than-thou duo for violin and piano and Novacek's celebration of ragtime. Also included on this disc is Claus Ogermann's beautiful arrangement of Charlie Chaplin's "Smile" from his movie Modern Times and Ning Kam's own energetic arrangement of the world's best-known hymn, written by the oldest John on this disc.
Electrifying ... gutsy and communicative.
