Notes & Reviews:
Glory Denied, the new opera by Tom Cipullo, is the saga of Col. Jim Thompson, the longest-held American POW in U.S. history. Cipullo's dramatic chamber opera based on the 2001 oral history by Tom Philpott, was recorded live with cast and ensemble of the 2013 Ft. Worth Opera Festival. Glory Denied is a distinctly American story encapsulating something of the moral essence of the Vietnam War and the bitterness of the war's legacy. Tom Cipullo's score is beautiful and chilling and returns us to a transformative era in our nation's history.
American Record Guide, January/February 2014
The text is accompanied by a small chamber group of only nine players. This small accompaniment allows the words to be clearly understood. The whole piece is quite moving. All the singers in this production deserve great praise. All have fine young voices.
