Notes & Reviews:
The Italian composer Pietro Mascagni was best known for his opera output, but on this recording we explore a selection of works for the concert hall from throughout his career. The works receive idiomatic performances by Gianandrea Noseda and the Filarmonica '900 del Teatro Regio Torino, with the tenor Luciano Ganc as a part of Chandos' ongoing series of Italian music.
Gramophone Magazine, October 2013
Some agreeably spick-and-span playing from the Turin orchestra under Gianandrea Noseda's sympathetic baton and Chandons's unobtrusively natural sound grace an anthology that Mascagni diehards will want to hear.
MusicWeb International, 22nd October 2013
As a whole this disc adds usefully to our knowledge of the composer without suggesting that his popular reputation needs to be revaluated. The orchestra play with apparent conviction and the recording is more than adequate.
BBC Music Magazine, Christmas Issue 2013
[Visione lirica and L'apoteosi della cicogna] abound in the searching harmonic progressions Mascagni later explored, which aren't always convincingly brought off in performance, though Noseda and his impeccable Turin players manage them with distinction, as they do everything on the disc.
