Notes & Reviews:

Calgary-based Rubbing Stone Ensemble is dedicated to the highest artistic standards of new music performance. With a special focus on commissioning new works and featuring local musicians and composers, Rubbing Stone Ensemble strives to nurture the musical environment that surrounds it. Variable instrumentation allows the ensemble to create boundless contemporary music experiences, and a sense of bold exploration underlies each new performance venture. Rubbing Stone Ensemble is named after the landmark glacial erratic stone of Calgary's Nose Hill Park, left after the last ice age, against which bison had shed their winter coats, eroding marks over time. To the ensemble, the stone is a symbol of the roots of its community, and of the quest for enduring artistry in a world of constant change. Since its inception in 2008, the Rubbing Stone Ensemble has given acclaimed performances including the 2009 Happening New Music Festival and the New Works Calgary 25th Anniversary Gala, commissioned several new works, and premiered a steady stream of works by Canadian composers.
