Notes & Reviews:

The cornett (also known as the cornetto or zink) is an early wind instrument that dates from the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods. William Dongois is one of the best-known cornettists of our time. On the present double CD, together with the ensemble Le Concert Brisé, he dedicates himself to the "Golden Age" of the cornett - the period between 1580 and 1630 in Northern Italy. The first disc focuses on secular dance movements and songs of the Italian Seicento, whilst the second disc features sacred instrumental and vocal music written for St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice during the time of Monteverdi.

American Record Guide, January/February 2014
All of the musicians are excellent. Dongois, who studied with leading cornettist Bruce Dickey, has a very warm tone and is a virtuoso. Italian-only texts are included, as well as a complete listing of specific instruments and the selections they are in. People interested in seeing this music can easily find the scores in the Petrucci Music Library (imslp.org) or ChoralWiki (cpdl.org). Following a score while listening, you will see that the bass line is played as written. It is fascinating to see the standard F- and G-clefs, the crispness of the printed notes and staves and tempo markings, and the amount of detail in the treble part. Folds in the page corners will tell you that 16th-Century musicians really did play from this score. And you will be thankful for the clarity and precision of today's music notation.
