Notes & Reviews:
Two years after the highly acclaimed recording of Giovanni Antonio Pandolfi Mealli's Opus 4, Gunar Letzbor returns with the Antonio Pandolfi Mealli's Opus 3, published in Innsbruck in 1660 and dedicated to his compatriot, the reigning archduchess Anna De' Medici (featured on the front cover). Letzbor revives the strange work of murderer-composer with a full-blooded performance that succeeds in captivating us from beginning to end.

The Opus 3 Violin Sonatas by Giovanni Antonio Pandolfi Mealli were dedicated to the duke and duchess of Austria and published in Innsbruck in 1660. Domenico Pandolfi has two sets of birth and death dates with this disc: 1624- 1687 and 1629-post 1679. These are robust pieces, played with verve and flair by soloist Gunar Letzbor and the Ars Antiqua Austria. The singing quality of the solo playing is most engaging, and the very fine ensemble offers a wide range of continuo colors: violone, colascione (a type of lute), chitarra, archlute, organ, and harpsichord. Constant changes in volume, texture, timbre, and tempo are executed beautifully. I would be glad to know more about these musicians.
