Expedition Audio Recommended
...It is the intricate compositional finesse to be heard here, exploring so many subtle possibilities that distinguish the music of this Bohemian Baroque master. ...The recordings from 1986 and 1994 sound wonderful. As a bonus, on the second CD we get to hear the artistry of Mr. Güttler playing the corni da caccia in over an hour of sacred pieces and instrumental capriccios... That's enough; this set is recommended with unbridled enthusiasm! ... read more ...

This two-CD set contains three large-scale sacred works and three Capriccios, instrumental suites of great virtuosity and brilliance, by Jan Dismas Zelenka. The works are heard here in definitive performances featuring renowned singers such as Rene Jacobs, Peter Schreier and Olaf Bar and the Virtuosi Saxoniae - an ensemble comprising some of the finest musicians from the Dresden Staatskapelle - under the baton of their founder, Ludwig Guttler.

American Record Guide, March/April 2014
Zelenka gives us more sustained harmonies, transparent textures, shorter, often repeating, phrases, and clear separation between decorative melodies and chords. Each movement of the Mass is broken into discrete movements, alternating chorus and soloists. Movements for vocal soloists in particular demonstrate the gallant-style penchant for concertante singing, which emphasizes conversational interplay. The singing and playing is outstanding. Texts and notes are in English.
