Notes & Reviews:
"...Like the two earlier Telarc issues, the operettas recorded here were written by Lehar for tenor Richard Tauber. The best music is reserved for the tenor, which helps account for Jerry Hadley's interest in them. Giuditta (1934) is considered to be Lehar's greatest achievement and was his 'favorite child.'...The plot may be contrived, but the score is filled with glorious melodies. I suspect that this recording will gain many admireres for the work..." -Bauman, FanfareNotes & Reviews:
Personnel: Jerry Hadley, Lynton Atkinson (tenor).
Recording information: EMI Abbey Road, Studio 1, London, England.
This English-language version of Franz Lehár's Giuditta is better realized than a typical highlights disc, but nowhere near as good as EMI's 130-minute version. This performance is a good compromise for non-German speakers, however, as it is very easy to find and only takes up one CD instead of two. Jerry Hadley is no Nicolai Gedda, but he does the job well; Deborah Riedel makes a vocally alluring Giuditta, and Richard Bonynge is a very sympathetic conductor when it comes to this material, with more of a flowing and emphatic touch than Willi Boskovsky, making for brisker pacing and a more overtly upbeat mood to the proceedings. ~ Bruce Eder
