Notes & Reviews:

Praga presents a generous collection of concertos - immaculately remastered for SACD - that had a powerful impact on music in the pre-war years. Berg wrote his concerto in memory of Manon Gropius, the daughter of his muse Alma Mahler, who died tragically at age 19. Berg himself died shortly afterward of septicemia, making the concerto his last completed work and his own farewell piece. The Berg is paired with two works by Bartók, his Violin Concerto No.2 and Rhapsody No.2. The soloist for all three of these modern masterworks is the great Isaac Stern, accompanied by Leonard Bernstein leading the New York Philharmonic.

American Record Guide, January/February 2014
I think the Bartok concerto is the great recording here. I also think all these recordings have been surpassed. For example, I much prefer Zukerman, even in the Bartok. So whether you want this depends on your response to Stern, who is very good here, and Bernstein, who is hard to beat. A little nostalgia may enter into it when you decide whether to buy this. I think this was Columbia's second stereo release. The sound is terrific here.
