Notes & Reviews:

The long history of the University of Michigan Symphony Band began in 1927. Since 1951 the ensemble has been among the leaders of the modern wind band movement in America through its recordings and performances in prestigious venues. It is known for its professional quality of performance and keen sense of "trailblazing" in building repertoire.

American Record Guide, January/February 2014
The program ends with Roshanne Etezady's Points of Departure, a witty, fourmovement, 20-minute song cycle about travel. Each movement has a vocal soloist, starting with Ali Gordon as a 'Travel Agent' who deals with clueless phone callers (depicted by plunger-muted trombonist Irene Wu). Ms Gordon has learned her musical theatre "Exaggerate!" lessons well. Next comes Alex Akin as the 'Teenage Driver' who remembers a pre-teen driving experience, muses excitedly about her coming driving test, and wonders about the future. Grace Morgan is the 'Aspiring Pilot' who, having been an earth-bound mother, dreams about flying an airplane. Finally, Chelsea Wilson is the 'Cruise ship entertainer' who sings three shows a night, six nights a week, on a three-month cruise. Excellent singing by the soloists, most of whom are recent UM music theatre graduates.
