Notes & Reviews:
Regina is indeed a very unusual opera by Albert Lortzing: a romantic political 'liberation opera' in which the main characters are workers that go on strike and sing for their freedom. This is the first recording of the original version.
American Record Guide, March/April 2014
This recording ignores the political matters and concentrates on the music. The recordings I have heard from this series are first-rate. The orchestra and chorus perform beautifully, and most of the soloists sing very well. The music reminds me a bit of Weber's Freischntz. There are fine tunes aplenty; several arias, mostly short, give the soloists opportunity to shine. As it is, it still is pleasant listening. The set comes with a complete German-English libretto, artist bios, and an interesting essay.
