Notes & Reviews:

Anna Sikorzak-Olek plays rarely recorded 20th century Polish harp repertoire.

American Record Guide, March/April 2015
First of all, Anna Sikorzak-Olek is the most monochromatic, flat-lined harpist I have yet reviewed in ARG. The Tansman (4 movements in 20 minutes) is harmonically like early Debussy and is mostly arpeggios galore over a "beautiful music" bed. The best orchestra here, the Polish Radio Symphony of Katowice, is heard in all the other works. The performance never stagnates, is always forward looking, and is relatively expressive, despite the suppressed engineering. The Poplawski (23 minutes), conducted by Klauza, is pure 19th-Century light romanticism. Moss quite accurately describes his one movement 25-minute work as "a journey to the land of sound fantasy". The work has a tonal center, and the orchestra, conducted again by Klauza, is replete with theatrical, atmospheric, and soundtrack modern effects. Maksymiuk conducts his own work. For the most part it is just a flute and harp duet, and some movements have plenty of trills. In brief, this album should be of interest only to harpists looking for a broader repertoire, with the Moss and Maksymiuk the most interesting.
