Notes & Reviews:

The second project of Collegium Vocale Gent and Philippe Herreweghe for Phi focuses on the Renaissance music of Carlo Gesualdo. The Tenebrae Responsories comprise a set of pieces for Holy Week, in all 27 motets for six voices, a psalm and hymn, published under his own supervision in 1611. The acoustics of the church in the Asciano village in Tuscany creates the perfect soundscape for this 2011 recording.

American Record Guide, March/April 2014
Listener beware: set aside your "Gesualdo Expectations". Listen, instead, as to a fine early 17th-Century composer of profound, beautiful, and moving religious music. The Responses for Holy Week are highly devotional works by a mature composer whose mastery of a color-filled compositional vocabulary was precise and whose own life's journey had led him to deep piety. Just a few examples illustrate the excellence of these performances: in the opening of the very first Response ('In Monte Oliveti' for Maundy Thursday), light voice-chasing figures quicken the texture like whisking air into cooking batter or egg whites. The texture is allowed to shimmer, demonstrating one of the many colors in the ensemble's palette. 'O Vos Omnes' from the Holy Saturday Responses is solemn and earnest.
