Notes & Reviews:

This is the fourth CD in a seven-CD series presenting all of Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst's compositions for the first time. It contains some of his most important compositions: an early Concertino with a melancholy slow movement and charming waltz finale; the fiendishly difficult Concerto that had a deep influence not only on Liszt's Piano Sonata but also on concertos by Brahms and Sibelius; and the late String Quartet, with echoes of Beethoven and Mendelssohn and an inwardness, charm and energy all of its own.

American Record Guide, March/April 2014
The Concertino (1837) and the Concerto (1846) are both Mendelssohnian works, lucid and comfortably tuneful. Mark Rowe's excellent notes claim the concerto casts its shadow as far as Brahms and Sibelius. The Concertino, curiously, is the longer work and more fully scored. The Quartet (1862) is a weightier entry. It's well constructed. Performances are all intelligent and sympathetic. Ernst's solo parts are, as you'd imagine, very demanding. Lupu's tone quality has the sweetness to help make this music come off. This is Volume 4 in a Toccata series dedicated to Ernst's work.
