Notes & Reviews:

This disc presents the three masterful works of Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) for solo clarinet and orchestra. Composed by Weber for the leading clarinet virtuoso of the era, Heinrich Joseph Baermann (1784 - 1847), these three works have endured as favorites of clarinetists and audiences alike. The present recordings were made in 2011, and feature Alexander Fiterstein, whose playing was praised by the New York Times for its "beautiful liquid clarity." Mr. Fiterstein is a first prize winner of the Carl Nielsen International Clarinet Competition and the "Aviv" competitions in Israel, and is a winner of the Young Concert Artists International Auditions.

American Record Guide, January/February 2014
There are some nice moments. Fiterstein plays with a decent sound, good phrasing, and sufficient technique, and the SFBO is a skilled collaborator. Moreover, his commitment to the music wavers, as a stunning color change in one passage is often followed by a rather pedestrian reading of the next several lines.

Elegant performances
Mozart was the first major composer to compose a clarinet concerto, but Weber runs a close second. Written a generation after Mozart, Weber's two clarinet concerti hold a similar place in the repertoire.

Clarinetist Alexander Fiterstein brings out those similarities in this new recordings. His liquid tone and precise intonation bring a classical elegance to these works -- a touch Mozart might appreciate.

Yet Fiterstein nimbly leaps about, almost dancing with the music. Perhaps its appropriate then, that he should be accompanied by a ballet orchestra, then. The San Francisco Ballet Orchestra, directed by Martin West provide a light and transparent ensemble sound that further strengthen the similarities between Mozart and Weber.

That's not to say these are pretty performances. Fiterstein and company provide plenty of drama and weight when required to -- especially in the second concerto. On the whole, appealing and inviting performances of these familiar works.
