Notes & Reviews:

Under the direction of brass icon John Stevens, and comprised of the finest professional brass players in the Midwest, Isthmus Brass is Wisconsin's premier large brass ensemble. No church holiday or secular celebration on the planet can hold a candle to Christmas in terms of the amount of music it has inspired. Christians hold their carols dear, singing them year after year, century after century, weaving them into worship and family celebrations. The best loved of these Christmas carols have transcended national boundaries, language barriers, and the passing of historical eras. Many who sing these carols today, with lyrics and tunes long committed to memory, have no idea of the songs' deep cultural roots and amazingly long histories.

American Record Guide, November/December 2013
What a terrific Christmas album! Named for the strip of land between lakes Mendota and Monona, Isthmus Brass draws most of its members from the University of Wisconsin- Madison and most of the rest from other UW campuses. The nicely varied program includes traditional Christmas carols and pieces, festive pops orchestra-style works, and big-band-style selections, all in winsome arrangements and played superbly. The playing is skillful, expressive, and infectiously enthusiastic. I've heard lots of Christmas brass albums over the years - this is one of the best.
