Notes & Reviews:

This is the second installment in the recording of Richard Strauss' symphonic poems with Francois-Xavier Roth and the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg. His 'transparent orchestral balance' has been praised by BBC Music Magazine.

Gramophone Magazine, January 2014
I have rarely heard [Till Eulenspiegel] played better. ..The opening is immediately seductive...yet Roth also catches the humour of the rogue's final forced departure...Roth directs all three performances with flair and understanding. They are superbly detailed and realistically recorded.

American Record Guide, March/April 2014
Attacks are clean and crisp, with no loss of emotional effect. Macbeth is especially powerful, its drama ever to the front. This has always struck me as the first work where we hear Strauss the great composer. Gerald Abraham called it "a fine, hard score" and Roth emphasizes both attributes. The performance packs a real wallop. His Till is tightly organized. What most fascinated me on the Roth album was his treatment of the sonorities in Don Quixote. Schoenberg's tone poem Pelleas and Melisande owes a great deal to Strauss's poem. The playing of the soloists is excellent. I particularly liked Guthmann's clear, yet expressive portrayal of the title role. This one goes to the top of recent recordings.
