Francaix: Trio for Bassoon & Piano; Previn: Trio for Bassoon & Piano; Poulenc: Trio, Op. 43 / Blumina Ens.

Notes & Reviews:

Ensemble Blumina is made up of three musicians hailing from Russia, Estonia and Germany and embody the best European tradition of music making. Their wide experience of chamber music means we forget their furiously flashing fingers in sheer fascination.

Multiple Grammy and Oscar winner André Previn's Trio for Oboe, Piano and Bassoon surprises listeners with a virtuosic interplay of alternation and contrast, which flashes mercurially through various genres and is happy to embrace opulent Broadway sounds.

Previn had an example to follow for this trio scoring. Francis Poulenc composed for this combination as a young man; together with his friends in the "Groupe des Six", he set out to match Wagnerian passion with innocent amusement.

Jean Françaix, grand master of the witty Divertissement, is another composer who wrote for this instrumentation. Françaix as we know him: crazy virtuosity alternating with heartfelt feeling, jolly fun and games mixed with expertly varied polyphony - first-class entertainment at the highest level!
