Notes & Reviews:
Treasured by orchestral players and soloists alike for his humility and sensitivity, Carlo Maria Giulini was a consummate accompanist; this nine-disc set brings together his finest concerto recordings, featuring stellar soloists such as Claudio Arrau, Nathan Milstein and Mstislav Rostropovich. Released in anticipation of the 100th anniversary of the conductor's birth in 2014, the collection showcases Giulini in some of the core German repertoire for which he was most revered, such as Brahms and Beethoven, but also demonstrates the scope of his musical interests - from Vivaldi's Four Seasons (heard here in its first professional performance by Giulini) to Romantic and 20th century masterpieces by the likes of Saint-Saens, Dvorak and Prokofiev.

Haydn's second can be problematic in that many performances are meandering and lacking in direction. Starker has an understanding of the structure and gives a beautifully crafted account. Articulation is crisp in the faster passages, and the slow movement is fervent and deeply expressive...Hats off to Warner for gathering these concerto performances under one roof. At budget price, this is an irresistible bargain.
