Notes & Reviews:

Violinist Thibault Noally has enjoyed a highly successful career as a member of several acclaimed period-instrument groups including the Musiciens du Louvre and Concerto Köln. This album of German Baroque music from Aparté marks Noally's début as a soloist. It explores the evolution of solo violin repertoire over the course of the 17th and 18th centuries through works by both well known composers (Bach, Telemann) and those who remained in the margins (Baltzar, Vilsmayr). Noally cleverly connects these works and creates a fascinating recital that sheds new light on a key period in the development of Baroque forms and techniques.

American Record Guide, May/June 2014
This is a very instructive program of music of the German baroque for solo violin. The name that was new to me here is Johann Joseph Vilsmayr (1663-1722). Four of Telemann's Fantasies are here, and these are fine music with a hint more counterpoint than is found in the Vilsmayr piece. Another rarely encountered name is Thomas Baltzar (1631-63). He mostly worked in England, and he was such a celebrated musician that he was accorded burial in the cloisters of Westminster Abbey. The most famous work here is Bach's Partita 2, which concludes with the magnificent Chaconne. He plays a violin made by Gennaro Vinaccia in Naples in 1719.
