Notes & Reviews:
The contribution to the Verdi Year 2013 by OehmsClassics is this recording of three concertante performances from the Stadttheater in Gießen made in December 2012. Chief Music Director Michael Hofstetter stood on the podium, ensuring a highly dramatic, ideal Verdi sound.

Verdi's first opera, Oberto was written in 1839. It does contain some fine music and deserves revival now and then. The cast generally sings well. In the title role Adrian Gans has a commanding voice with lots of power. The mezzo, Manuela Custer, really impresses in her opening aria of Act II. Norman Reinhardt sings musically. The orchestra and chorus perform ably, and the conductor keeps thing moving nicely. It has a basic timings, an essay of sorts, and some nice pictures.
