Notes & Reviews:

  • Today almost entirely forgotten, Johann Georrg Reutter was the most successful composer of opera in Vienna during the 1730s, and the single and most influential composer of church music in Vienna for three decades.
  • Reutter is one of the few composers who composed for the Pantaleon (salterio), as had his teacher Caldara.
  • This programme, performed by La Gioia Armonica, features four arias for obligato salterio.

Expedition Audio Recommended
This is the second CD recommended on Expedition Audio of music by German composer Johann Georg Reutter (1708-1772), who has long been handed the short end of the proverbial stick by history's musicologists... Reutter's music is not only extraordinarily beautiful; it is also richly varied in texture, color and atmosphere with each facet inspired by a fascinating musical imagination. ... read more ...

American Record Guide, July/August 2014
All of the soprano arias and some of the motets on the program call for an obbligato pantaleon, a kind of hammered dulcimer that was of a certain fashion among German and Austrian composers in Reutter's time. As dulcimer players go, Margit Ubellacker must be considered a virtuoso. Ubellacker's playing is wonderful, and a lovely complement to Monika Mauch's delicate soprano. And hearing Mauch together with Stanislava Jirku (alto) in the motets makes for gorgeous sonority over a busy filigree of violin figuration. Jirku has a strong, rich alto voice - very expressive in her passage work in 'Hodie in Ecclesia Sanctorum' and 'Surrexit Pastor Bonus'. The notes are very informative; both they and the texts are in English.
