Notes & Reviews:

Saverio Mercadante's substantial contribution to instrumental music is exceptional among other famous Italian opera composers of his time. Both his Omaggio a Bellini and the Gran Sinfonia sopra motivi dello Stabat Mater del celebre Rossini are fantasias which contrast the dramatic and the lyrical in their selection of famous tunes of the day. The Seconda Sinfonia caratteristica napoletana magnificently captures the spirit of the tarantella, while the small-scale Clarinet Concerto No. 2 is reminiscent of Mozart. Two patriotic anthems and a popular Milanese song infuse the sumptuously orchestrated Garibaldi - Sinfonia a grand'orchestra that celebrates Italian unification.

American Record Guide, July/August 2014
All of the music is enjoyable and there is a lot of original music with some beautiful melodies, tarantellas, and brisk finales. The best known work is the Clarinet Concerto, excellently played by Casani. La Vecchia leads committed performances, the orchestra plays like this music is in their blood, and the sound, which varies by location, is generally excellent. Very informative notes are included in English and Italian. The recording is part of a Naxos series of 19th century Italian classics led by La Vecchia. This is a very good introduction to Mercandante's symphonic music at a bargain price.

Italianate classicism
"Omaggion a Bellini" and the "Gran Sinfonia sopra motivi dello Stabat Mater del celeb re Rossini" owe a lot to their source material. Mercadante is an imaginative arranger, but its the quality of the tunes that carry these works.

The "Seconda Sinfonia caratteristica napoletana" reminds me somewhat of Mendelssohn's "Italian" Symphony. The Neapolitan melodies and rhythms are orchestrated in a similar fashion -- with two major differences. First, Mercadante's Sinfonia is shorter and lighter. Second, Mercadante's speaking the musical language of his own country, instead of interpreting it second-hand as Mendelssohn did.

"Garibaldi - Sinfonia a grand'orchstra sopra l'inno dei cacciatori delle Alpi," also interprets Italian folk music for the concert stage, but in a much more serious fashion. Mercadante's work celebrates Italian unification, giving the work greater emotional weight than the lighthearted Second Sinfonia.

All in all a pleasing program of Italian orchestral music from the early 19th century.
