Notes & Reviews:

This 1992 reissue is a collection of some of the greatest French composers and pianists playing their own compositions. These recordings were made of the highest standard and are taken from the original piano rolls mad almost 100 years ago.

American Record Guide, November/December 2014
This is a great compilation that gives a view into the past (1904-1935), when it was more common for pianists to create piano rolls than to make audio recordings. Even Rachmaninoff, probably the first major talent to make extensive audio recordings (1917-1943), committed a number of his performances to piano rolls and reproducing pianos. There were seven competing methods for mechanically recording piano performances in the early years of the 1900s. Three different ones were used in this collection: Ampico, Duo-Art, and Welte Mignon. What we have here was recorded in 1992 on a new concert-grand piano. Thanks to the efforts of Australian Denis Condon, a teacher, author, historian, and collector-rebuilder of reproducing pianos, DalSegno can offer its series of rare and original recordings by past masters.
