Notes & Reviews:

Alonso Lobo was recognized by his contemporaries and later generations as one of the great masters of Spanish polyphony. Favorite disciple of and assistant to Francisco Guerrero in Seville, Lobo was the only musician of the time to serve as chapel master at both Seville and Toledo cathedrals, which were at the top of the Spanish ecclesiastical system. His Liber primus missarum (1602) was widely circulated in Spain and the New World. Of the six masses included in the original printed edition, La Grande Chapelle has chosen the Prudentes virgines and Beata Dei genitrix masses, neither of which is available in a modern edition. Using Guerrero's motets of the same name as a starting point, Lobo combines, with unequalled mastery, erudite imitative techniques such as enigmatic canons with daring harmonic and expressive flourishes that have drawn comparisons with the work of El Greco, his exact contemporary in Toledo.

American Record Guide, May/June 2014
From the very first notes we hear how the fervent warmth of La Grande Chapelle animates the music. The vocal blend is rich, and the singers' ability to sound far larger. In the fivepart Prudentes Virgines Mass, is perfectly done: perfect not only in the ensemble's technical prowess but also the way the singers shape musical lines and carry the listener along. Both masses honor Biblical women: the first is the story of the five foolish and the five wise virgins; the second is the six-part Beata Dei Genetrix mass honoring the Mother of God. Excellent booklet notes by Javier Marin Lopez describe innovative elements in both Guerrero's motets and Lobo's masses. I always find that to be a much better performing choice. Stephan Schellmann - sound engineer, who also did the editing and mastering - deserves special recognition for the beauty of the recorded sound. The Prudentes Virgines Mass is marked here as a first recording, and I hope that there will be more recordings to come.
