Notes & Reviews:

The Jeunesse MehrWERT Prize of the Erste Bank was awarded for the first time to the Adamas Quartet in 2013. A major concern of these four young musicians is the treatment of outlawed music, works termed as degenerate and banned in Germany beginning in the 1930s. Against this backdrop, String Quartet No. 2, op. 7 'From the Monkey Mountains' by the Czech composer Pavel Haas and the String Quartet No. 2, op. 26 by Erich Wolfgang Korngold were selected for this debut CD. The already widely acclaimed ensemble opens with the Quartet op. 64/5 by Joseph Haydn, the 'Lark's Quartet'.

American Record Guide, January/February 2015
Pavel Haas (1899-1944) was a Czech composer who studied with Janacek. His Quartet 2 has some similarities with Janacek's two quartets. It also has an emotional complexity similar to Janacek's. Listening to Korngold's Quartet 2, I found myself often thinking, "Gosh, this sounds familiar." Korngold was a pioneer of film music, and much of this work does sound like a film score from the 1930s or 1940s. The finale is a virtuosic waltz slightly reminiscent of Ravel's waltzes, ending with an over-the-top flourish. Following such a display, Haydn's Lark Quartet was a welcome contrast. I appreciated the Adamas's ability to shift gears so well. Adamas excels at both. Their rendition is light and elegant.
