Notes & Reviews:

This concert is something special due to the presence of the superstar American soprano Deborah Voigt and the magnetic direction of English conductor Jeffrey Tate. "What he brings out in the orchestra scenes from "Twilight of the gods" is indeed "divine"," said one German critic. In fact, 'Divine' is the title of this CD/DVD release in which scenes from Gotterdammerung are preceded by Stravinsky's ballet Apollon Musagète.

The concerts of the Hamburger Symphony are always remarkable - director Daniel Kühnel and the renowned orchestra director Jeffrey Tate have made excellent - and enviable - names for themselves since the start of their cooperation in 2009 with their distinguished programming for the orchestra. And they follow unusual paths: in order to record this live concert in the Hamburg Laeiszhalle (in 2012) for the DVD, the Hamburger Symphoniker was the first German classical music organisation to partially finance it via crowdfunding, the new form of donation collection online.

The DVD contains 10 minutes of bonus material - 'Behind the Scenes' interviews with Deborah Voigt, Jeffrey Tate and others.

Deborah Voigt is "one of the world's leading dramatic sopranos" (New York Observer), internationally revered for her performances in the operas of Wagner and Richard Strauss and for her portrayals of the great Italian operatic heroines. Besides "riding high in the opera house and on the recital stage" (Wall Street Journal), Voigt performs Broadway standards, gives masterclasses, and boasts an extensive discography. The singular power and beauty of her voice is complemented by her winning personality and stage presence.

Recitals take her to numerous cities nationwide, including Miami, Fort Worth, Texas, Kansas City, Sonoma, Palm Desert, and Stanford, Calif., and Boston, where she has also performed Voigt Lessons, the one-woman show she developed with award-winning playwright Terrence McNally and director Francesca Zambello; the Examiner observed, "The piece breathed spontaneity, wit, and vulnerability that moved and engaged the audience."

On television Voigt, hosted a special five-night presentation of Wagner's complete "Ring" cycle on the PBS series Great Performances from the Met. Robert Lepage's visionary new staging, in which Voigt starred as Brünnhilde, and that won the Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording of 2013.

Voigt has given definitive performances of iconic roles in German opera, from Richard Strauss's Ariadne to Wagner's Isolde, besides winning accolades for such Italian roles as Aida, Tosca, and Amelia. In addition to the Grammy- winning "Ring" set, her discography of complete operas ranges from Tristan und Isolde to Les Troyens and Dief frau ohne schatten. She has also been profiled in many important national media outlets, such as CBS's 60 Minutes, Good Morning America, and Vanity Fair.
