Notes & Reviews:

Following unparalleled success with recordings for orchestra and choir, including awards in recent years from both Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine, the Halle and Sir Mark Elder present a compelling program of evocative and rarely-performed works. The performances of these works perfectly illustrate the renaissance that has been achieved at the Halle under Sir Mark Elder, including from the two Halle choirs. The recording also features acclaimed British baritone Roderick Williams, a soloist at the height of his powers, in repertoire that is perfectly suited to his lyrical, dramatic, and musical expertise.

American Record Guide, July/August 2014
Sir Mark is rapidly developing as a strong champion of British music and as a sensitive exponent of the music of Frederick Delius in particular. Sea Drift, based on a Whitman text, is one of the composer's finest works and shows what can be accomplished when a composer has the ability to set a text in full sympathy with the poet. Cynara is a setting of a poem by Eric Dowson. Cynara! in my fashion" lends a bittersweet and cynical quality, perfectly caught by the Delian magic. Williams is superb here, and recording is worth having for this alone. Holst's Hymn of Jesus is perhaps his best known choral work. The performance is fully competitive with the finest.
