Notes & Reviews:

American Record Guide, July/August 2014
Of Heinrich August Marschner's 17 stage works only two are remembered, if very rarely recorded or performed: Der Vampyr (1828) and Hans Heiling (1833). Both are styled "Grosse Romantische Oper". Now Walhall lets us hear one of Marschner's rarities: Der Holzdieb (1825). This one is a singspiel. There is plenty of "Romantische". The recording (from Freiburg, 1962) is in excellent sound and the performance fills all the requirements. The singers all have good voices and they sing with lots of gusto and feel for the comedy.
