Notes & Reviews:

  • This recording presents a crosssection of works by unjustly neglected Argovia (northern Swiss canton) composers.
  • The works are generally characterized by a neoclassical, moderate style, primarily influenced by tonality, clear in form, yet varied and distinctive in their compositional structure.
  • The argovia philharmonic is led by Douglas Bostock.
  • Live recording of the 50th anniversary official gala concert, 28 April 2013.

American Record Guide, May/June 2014
Five Swiss composers are represented on this very-well-played and superlatively recorded anthology of works written from 1945 to 1970. It never fails to amaze me how Victorian such ostensibly futuristic tone-poems almost always sound: Rimsky-Korsakoff updated with spaceships and midcentury-modern orchestral furnishings.

This is a fine collection of music by five virtually unknown composers whose works sit well together. To varying degrees, these pieces have in common intriguing and effective formal structures, largely tonal complexions and colorful orchestration. It's one of the most outstanding collections of mid-twentieth century orchestral music I've come across in quite some time. For the adventurous listener, it's urgently recommended. read more
