Notes & Reviews:

  • André Tchaikowsky (1935-82) - no relation to Pyotr Tchaikovsky - was one of the finest pianists of his era, but his true calling was as a composer.
  • This first conspectus of his piano music features the first recording of his Piano Concerto, the epigrammatic Inventions and his only mature Piano Sonata.
  • This CD, the first of a series, is released in conjunction with the Toccata Press publication of an annotated edition of his diaries.

American Record Guide, May/June 2014
At any rate it's a stunner. Where has it been hiding all these years? The performance is excellent, too. The (recorded-inconcert) sound is satisfactory. The 1958 Piano Sonata shows the composer still evolving his own voice. The outer allegros are chromatic and restless, the central Largo more tonal and romantic. The finale - a concise, toccata-like perpetuum mobile, the most persuasive movement. The Ten Inventions is a fully mature work (1962) and a masterpiece of its kind, confirming both the individuality and consistency of Tchaikowsky's personal language, as well as the variety and range of emotion it made possible. Each of these lovingly shaped gems, perfectly written for the instrument. A visit to Tchaikowsky's memorial Web site lists an impressive roster of pianists who've played his music.
