Notes & Reviews:

This original program abruptly juxtaposes early sonatas, based on the models provided by Haydn, with the impatience of Sonata No.22. This long forgotten diptych, as brief and adventurous as it is essential owing to its modernism, foreshadows the return to Bach, given a new treatment by Reger and Berg. Sviatoslav Richter charms with his Haydn-like sense of humor, then sharply addresses the listener in the Opus 54. These live recordings were made in 1959 and 1975.

American Record Guide, July/August 2014
Piano pedagogue Heinrich Neuhaus praised Richter for "his singular ability to grasp the whole and at the same time miss none of the smallest details of a composition". Sonata 3 celebrates spontaneity and humor. He summons grandeur with his understated approach to 12. The first movement is particularly lovely, with some wonderfully transparent, rapid figurations. Richter balances grace and ferocity. The sound is generally clear. Praga's series dedicated to remasterings of Richter is a valuable project.
