Notes & Reviews:

  • Composer, devoted folklorist and song collector E. J. Moeran's musical maturity came late in life. His three rhapsodies are lively and inventive masterly miniatures.
  • JoAnn Falletta leads the Ulster Orchestra in this 2012 recording.
  • Ms. Falletta holds the posts of Music Director for the Buffalo Philharmonic and Prinicpal Conductor of the Ulster Orchestra. She's conducted over 100 American composer world premieres.

The Guardian, 2nd January 2014
In the Ulster Orchestra's robust performances of the three early works...it's possible to hear Moeran's steadily increasing confidence, both in his writing for orchestra and in handling form...Frith is the committed, appropriately energetic soloist.

The Times, 28th December 2013
Sympathetically conducted by JoAnn Falletta...Celtic pastoralism with astringent chromatic harmonies and sometimes stormy emotions.

MusicWeb International, 28th January 2014
The sound is full-on and splendid, courtesy of Tim Handley and Phil Rowlands...Falletta brings real vibrancy to these scores.

BBC Music Magazine, February 2014
[The Third Rhapsody] may ramble a bit but is a very enjoyable work full of telling ideas, and Benjamin Frith definitely makes the most of the meaty solo part...Falletta directs the Ulster Orchestra with a keen understanding of Moeran's idiom, the lyric vulnerability as well as the extrovert dynamism.
