Notes & Reviews:

  • Composer Jan Van der Roost's Sinfonia Hungarica (2001) uses key figures and historical moments in pre-Hungarian history to tell its story. From Ancient Times is an homage to the Renaissance era Franco-Flemish School of music paid via use of 'modernized' older compositional techniques.
  • Mr. Van der Roost leads the Philharmonic Winds OSAKAN in this recording.
  • The Philharmonic Winds OSAKAN pursues new possibilities in wind music. Mr. Van der Roost is its Principal Guest Conductor.

American Record Guide, May/June 2014
Belgian composer Jan van der Roost (b 1956) is spending much time in Japan, where he teaches in Tokyo, Nagoya, and Kawasaki and is principal guest conductor of this fine wind ensemble. He writes thrilling music. From Ancient Times (2009) is a wonderful 19-minute work that very effectively combines old and modern sounds and styles, managing to sound both eclectic and disciplined, free-form and clearly structured. For concert band aficionados, this is a must-hear album. The spectacular music is given superb readings by a terrific band.
