Where would we music lovers be without the Naxos label working doggedly to record the music of every deserving composer they can get their ears on? In this case, it's the orchestral music of Italian composer Alfredo Catalani... All this music is beautifully performed by conductor Francesco La Vecchia and the Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma, the same team that has been bringing us the popular series of orchestral music by another Italian, Alfredo Casella. ... read more ...

The best piece, by far, is the 1884 symphonic poem Ero e Leandro...The performances, from the Rome Symphony under Francesco La Vecchia, are thrillingly intense.

American Record Guide, July/August 2014
Ero and Leandro is a symphonic poem describing the part of the Hero and Leander story where Hero swims out to save Leander during a storm. Catalani's depiction of the waves and storm is quite evocative and demonstrates his excellent orchestration skills. Il Mattino is described as a one-movement symphony and has several distinguishable sections. The strings always dominate and beautifully underline the main melodies. All of these works are exquisite. Each piece is entirely original. Naxos's sound is excellent.

MusicWeb International, 9th April 2014
With expert and idiomatic performances from the Rome orchestra and conductor Francesco La Vecchia, fine work by the recording engineers and the attractive Naxos price point, anyone who enjoys late 19th century orchestral music will not, I think, be disappointed...These unfamiliar scores may not be masterpieces but they certainly do not deserve the obscurity in which they have languished for more than a century.
