Notes & Reviews:

  • Zdenek Fibich was one of the more important Czech composers of the later Romantic era, displaying common cause with fellow countryman Antonin Dvorak and the Austro-German romantics.
  • His 2nd symphony is considered one of his best works, programmatic in style despite no explicit program.
  • Marek Stilec lead the Czech National Symphony Orchestra in this 2012 recording.
  • Mr. SWtilec's concern for authenticity lead him back to the original scores for this recording.

MusicWeb International, 12th March 2014
Major works like the cycle of three melodramas Hippodamia show [Fibich] to be a writer of no mean accomplishment, who despite his early death by no means deserves to be overshadowed by his contemporaries Smetana and Dvorßk. Indeed those who enjoy the symphonies of the latter will find much to interest them here too.
