Notes & Reviews:

  • Zdenek Fibich was one of the more important Czech composers of the later Romantic era, displaying common cause with fellow countryman Antonin Dvorak and the Austro-German romantics.
  • His 2nd symphony is considered one of his best works, programmatic in style despite no explicit program.
  • Marek Stilec lead the Czech National Symphony Orchestra in this 2012 recording.
  • Mr. SWtilec's concern for authenticity lead him back to the original scores for this recording.

Major works like the cycle of three melodramas Hippodamia show [Fibich] to be a writer of no mean accomplishment, who despite his early death by no means deserves to be overshadowed by his contemporaries Smetana and Dvor▀k. Indeed those who enjoy the symphonies of the latter will find much to interest them here too.
