Notes & Reviews:

  • Sir Andrew Davis conducts the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in works inspired by Norway's landscape and culture.
  • The influence of Edvard Grieg, Delius' great friend and mentor, is obvious in these works.

Financial Times, 25th January 2014
A string of orchestral and vocal works inspired by the composer's love for the landscape of the Scandinavian country.

Gramophone Magazine, March 2014
The Bergen Philharmonic play with elan, Davis clearly knows his Delius and Chandos's sound is superb.

MusicWeb International, 12th March 2014
The quality of the sound reproduction is ideal and the enthusiasm and dedication of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and their conductor Sir Andrew Davis is palpable...this programme has been lovingly chosen by Chandos: it is a superb selection that showcases the deep affection Delius had for Norway, the composer's absorption of its culture, and finally his friendship with Edvard Grieg.

American Record Guide, May/June 2014
Davis does very well with this, his first recording of Eventyr. Norwegian lyric soprano Ann-Helen Moen does two of the Norwegian songs, 'Twilight Fancies' and 'The Bird's Story'. Since we usually hear them performed in English it is a rare treat to hear them in Norwegian with a purity of sound and spine-tingling inflections. It shows his skill as an orchestrator and his admiration for his mentor and friend. Andrew Burn's notes are informative, and texts are in English, German, and Norwegian.
