The performances here are first rate. They are one of the leading baroque instrumental ensembles in Germany. The recordings were made in the historic Freylinghausen Hall of the Francke Foundation in Halle. Some 300 years ago, theologian August Hermann Francke (1663-1727) founded an orphanage that became an important center for education, publishing, and the cultivation and dissemination of sacred song in the Pietist tradition. The foundation's baroque-period buildings with their collections and archives survive today. It remains an important cultural, educational, and academic center - and a most appropriate site for this recording.
