Performer Composers

Notes & Reviews:

  • The debut solo album from Vadym Kholodenko, the 2013 Van Cliburn competition winner: one of the world's handful of most prestigious piano contests
  • Comparatively rare, yet supremely classy repertoire by two composers from Russia's 'golden age' of piano composition
  • Technically brilliant, yet soulfully deep interpretations
  • 'the 27-year-old Ukrainian pianist put on pretty amazing display of virtuosity - and...musical depth...' - Dallas News

American Record Guide, July/August 2014
This is the third disc by Kholodenko to come my way. The gold medal winner at both the 2013 Van Cliburn and 2011 Schubert International competitions is only 28 years old and clearly one of the top young pianists today. The Rachmaninoff transcriptions were mostly born during the composer's career as a concert pianist. He knew and played a number of Liszt works in the same genre and had a good ear for what audiences would like, and of course the ability to write effectively for the piano. Kholodenko is so good that I simply want them all. The Medtner Sonata is his seventh (Op. 25:2) and dedicated to Rachmaninoff.
