Notes & Reviews:

Compositional clarity of purpose amid a counterpoint of ideas and materials brings together this generous collection of Jeffrey Mumford's music, all of which are heard in thoughtful and sensitive performances. A native of Washington, D.C., composer Jeffrey Mumford has received numerous fellowships, grants, awards and commissions including the Academy Award in Music from the American Academy of Arts & Letters. Formerly on the faculty at Oberlin College, he is now Distinguished Professor of Music at Lorain County Community College. Mumford was in residence at the National Gallery of Art in 2013 and some of the works on this 2-CD recording come out of this residency.

American Record Guide, May/June 2014
A big dose of modernist music by Jeffrey Mumford (b 1955), a former student of Elliott Carter. He says An Expanding Distance of Multiple Voices, for solo violin, is a theme with variations in five movements. Through a Stillness Brightening is a chamber concerto for violin with clarinet and bassoon, trumpet and trombone, double bass and percussion. Julia Bruskin, perhaps best known as cellist in the Claremont Trio, is the highly skilled and expressive player in a studio recording of To Find in the Glimmering Air...A Buoyant Continuity of Layering Blue. Winston Choi is the solo pianist in two little Elliott Carter tributes. The Avalon Quartet is heard in a concert reading of the 18-minute In Forests of Evaporating Dawns. Flutist Christina Jennings and pianist Lura Johnson are heard in 'An Evolving Romance'. They are in a University of Michigan recital hall, and they play passionately. Violist Eliesha Nelson parries with bassist Scott Dixon for nine minutes in Through the Filtering Dawn of Spreading Daylight. Wendy Richman is the solo violist in the 11-minute Wending, the one work here that hints at tonality. The tantalizing hope of more such moments, along with Ms Richman's conviction and wonderful tone quality, make this my favorite piece on the program.
