The music of Paul Graener (1872-1944) is heavily indebted to late Romantic traditions. A student of Anton Bruckner and a rough contemporary of Richard Strauss, you can hear the influence of these composers in his music, as well as that of Wagner, Mahler and Reger... Performances are stunning and cpo's sound engineering is up to their usual high standards. ... read more ...

The music is idyllically conservative: essentially nineteenth century romantic but with lightened transparent textures...Also common to these scores is a grace - something close to kindliness...All in all Graener's music is not easily dismissed.

American Record Guide, May/June 2014
His D-minor Symphony (1911) has the subtitle Schmied Schmerz (Pain, the Blacksmith) after a poem by Otto Julius Bierbaum. The poem was well known then; Siegmund von Hausegger wrote a choral-orchestral setting. His suite From the Realm of Pan (1920) is an orchestration of a piano piece. Prinz Eugen (1939) is a 16-minute fantasia on the early 18th Century popular tune. The performances and conducting are solid.
