Notes & Reviews:

BMOP/sound presents six large-ensemble works representing more than 50 years in the singular compositional life of American composer Milton Babbitt on its latest disc, All Set. From the jazz-influenced riffs of the title track, to the unique timbral blend of synthesizer and strings explored in Correspondences, to the pointillist clarity of Composition for Twelve Instruments, Gil Rose and the BMOP orchestra play Babbitt's multifaceted works with insight and precision. Celebrated soprano Lucy Shelton joins the orchestra for the spiritual From the Psalter; two works for mixed ensemble, Paraphrases and The Crowded Air, complete the set.

American Record Guide, May/June 2014
His early Composition pieces set the stage for his very original explorations of hard-core serialism - an exploration that would define his musical life. The number of players in the Composition for 12 Instruments (1948) is, of course, no accident. The ensemble is a standard chamber orchestra, which contains 12 instruments. All Set (1957) leaves the realm of classical chamber music for the world of jazz. The title, in typical Babbitt style, is a collection of intricate puns. Correspondences (1967) is a piece for synthesizer and orchestra. Paraphrases (1979) is another chamber ensemble piece. The program concludes with two short pieces. 'The Crowded Air' (1988) is a brief chamber work written for his colleague Elliott Carter's 80th birthday. The latest piece on the program, 'From the Psalter' (2002), is a valedictory setting for soprano and string orchestra of lines from Psalms 13, 40, and 41, as arranged by Sir Philip Sidney (1554-86).
