Notes & Reviews:

  • Axel Borup-Jorgensen's catalogue amounts to more than 180 opus numbers.
  • He was a seminal figure in contemporary Danish musical life and recipient of a number of the country's most distinguished awards.
  • His work is thoroughly 'modern', organic, expressionist, aphoristic - even 'painterly,'.
  • This recording presents Borup-Jørgensen's complete works for recorder. Each work carefully explores the recorder's potential as a melody instrument and as a source of new forms of acoustic expression.

American Record Guide, May/June 2014
The collection of recorder music by Axel Borup-Jorgensen spans about 35 years of the Danish composer's career, from the late 1970s to the second decade of the new millennium. The earliest works sound the most proto-typically 12-tone. Borup-Jorgensen clearly had an affinity for it, and treated it not as an oddity, but as an instrument with much to add to pieces like the ones collected here. The playing is superb and defies the expectations of people who see the recorder as a limited instrument. This collection is as niche as it gets - a specialty item that recorder enthusiasts will enjoy.
