Notes & Reviews:

Il Trionfo di Dori was printed in 1592. A Venetian nobleman, Leonardo Sanudo asked 29 authors to compose a poem, then asked 29 musicians to compose a madrigal to each text. Il Trionfo di Dori describes idyllic scenes of a mythical past merged with a peaceful pastoral world. Each piece closes with the words 'Viva la bella Dori!',the collection's unifyng element. Dori, the lovely sea nymph, is the name that hints at the woman to whom the work was dedicated, Elisabetta Giustinian.

A Welcome Revival
Gruppo Vocale Arsi & Tesi IL TRIONFO DI DORI Tactus

First printed at the dawn of music publishing by Angelo Gardano, this collection of madrigals was unusual in its time; the lyrics were written by 29 different poets, with music later added by 29 different musicians, the entire project undertaken at the behest of Venetian nobleman and patron Leonardo Sanudo. Sharing as a common theme the story of Dori, a sea nymph from classical mythology, each piece ends with the words “Viva la bella Dori.”

Beautifully sung by early music specialists Gruppo Vocale Arsi & Tesi under the direction of bass singer and Tallis Scholars alumnus Tony Corradini, this is an outstanding recording of rarely heard late 16th century parlor music.

While each piece can be heard as a “stand alone” composition, perhaps the greatest pleasure to be had is in the cumulative effect of hearing and comparing music by the best known early Italian composers side by side, as would have been done at the time of their first performance.

One does not need to be a scholar of early polyphonic music to appreciate “Il Trionfo di Dori”; beauty like this is timeless and Gruppo Vocale Arsi & Tesi deserve a vote of thanks for making it available for a modern audience.

Highly recommended 91/2 out of 10 Oscar O. Veterano
