Notes & Reviews:

  • Mostly premiere recordings of Baroque Recorder Sonatas from the collection of Viceroy of Naples
  • The greatest discovery of the collection is certainly the sonata by Adolf Hasse, then Europe's leading opera composer
  • These works are among the highlights of late Baroque music

American Record Guide, July/August 2014
This is stunning music, extremely well played by Rothert and harpsichordist Luca Quintavalle. In some movements the latter uses the contemporary practice of adding a short prelude in order to establish the key before the recorder melody starts. The two play as one, with the confidence to stretch rhythms in exploratory declamatory passages, play with exhilarating speed, and delicately alter pitch sometimes to enhance expressive effects. Harpsichord glissandos in the final movement of the last piece crown the jolly tumult.
