Ensemble Composers

Notes & Reviews:

A fascinating pairing of two breakthrough works. Schoenberg's Verklarte Nacht was so popular that the composer authorized his former pupil, the pianist Eduard Steuermann, to make the present transcription for piano trio. Korngold's Piano Trio was his first published composition and an amazingly sophisticated work for a boy not yet thirteen.

James Longstaffe, Presto Classical, 1st December 2014
Korngold's Piano Trio, Opus 1, was his first published work, completed at age twelve, and is given a stirring performance here by the members of the Fidelio Trio.

American Record Guide, July/August 2014
His massive Piano Trio, Op. 1, was composed when he was 12 years old. It's a monster. It's very thick, very complex, and sometimes quite progressive. It's also really loud, with huge chords, flourishes, and booming low-register octaves in the piano. Also on the program is Schoenberg's most popular work, Verklarte Nacht, originally for string sextet. Schoenberg arranged it for string orchestra to give it the necessary fullness of expression.
